Hospitality Scholars Foundation’s Leadership Team

Dr. Brian J. Hill of Hill Foodservice Consulting (HFC) is a 30-year veteran of the Hospitality Industry. In addition to 30 years of professional industry experience, Dr. Hill is a trained Chef, holds undergraduate degrees in Culinary Arts and Food Service Systems Management. He holds a graduate degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management and an earned Doctorate degree in Adult and Continuing Education with a specialization in Adult Development Theory. Dr. Hill is also a licensed Hospitality Industry Trainer in the areas of Food Safety, Alcohol Awareness, Hotel Operations, and Customer Service in total more than 25 separate areas of the Hospitality and Retail Industry. Dr. Hill is the first African American male to be given tenure in the Saint Xavier University Graham School of Management.

Ms. Lillia L. Key is the Director of Community Outreach, has more than 30 years working in the community and is owner of Lenore’s Kitchen Catering.  She has been a strong advocate for the children in the Chicago Public School/Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Programs. Ms. Key works with Dr. Hill to develop Hospitality Scholars Foundation Programs and Outreach.  She brings with her years of food service experience as well as numerous relationships such as National Council of Negro Women, Top Ladies of Distinction as well as several other faith and community based organizations to the foundation.

She has a passion for scholarship management, career readiness, post-secondary guidance and assisting CPS culinary arts/hospitality management students.  Ms. Key is a trained chef and has taught students through the Key Works Foundation for more than 15 years.  She’s excited about the challenge of bringing her love for CPS students and the new opportunities available as the Director of Community Outreach and trainer for Hospitality Scholars Foundation.

Hill Foodservice Consulting (HFC) has had the pleasure of working with CPS and specifically the CTE department for the past 22 years and has partnered with the Hospitality Scholars Foundation to provide learning opportunities and scholarships to students all over the Chicagoland area as well as certified more than 7000 students to attend CTE Career Academies.

WHAT WE DO

A. Work to provide internships for students within the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Industry. This includes working with local businesses in the Hospitality field to create a pool of internship opportunities for CTE students to obtain hands on work experience in the Culinary/Hospitality Industry. Additionally, regular school visits to work with students and provide information and facilitate external exposure opportunities are included. This includes field trips within the industry, access to industry related trade events and Culinary/Hospitality college events.  The Director of Community Outreach is the business agent assigned to the CTE schools and may also facilitate fundraising and other community engagement
opportunities.

B. Provide a College readiness and Scholarship program that will consist of a rigorous application and competition process
to enrich, prepare and identify CPS Culinary/Hospitality Students eligible to receive College Scholarship offers. This will also include the support and skills training and practice necessary to facilitate success.  A competitive evaluation process will be the capstone event and be an integral part of the evaluation process for scholarship awards. Provide College Scholarships for Students in the field of Culinary Arts and Hospitality through awards given to the Hospitality Scholars Foundation which is managed by Hill Food Service Consulting.

C. Plan and host practices, competitions and ceremonies related to student’s achievement milestones

D. Students who desire to enter the Hotel Industry upon graduation from a CTE school may be admitted at no cost to them to the HFC Hospitality Career Pathways Program where they will receive additional certifications in Customer Service, Alcohol Awareness and Entry Level Hotel Uniform Services.  This also includes job placement services within a Hotel.

E. Design and implement a one-week summer resident program for students to bolster Hospitality Industry engagement and college readiness

F. Provide Faculty Development Seminars for Culinary/Hospitality Teachers relative to current Hospitality Industry trends that will inform faculty with the most current industry activities and initiatives.  This is inclusive of two workshop type seminars to be conducted in conjunction with professional industry partners to enhance the teacher experience and
provide them with valuable information regarding employment opportunities locally for students both in school and on the verge of graduation.

G. Provide annual reports to CTE Manager regarding progress and outcomes

H. Provide Career Readiness and Employment Retention Workshops. This will consist of the following core components:

i. Industry and Career Exploration
ii. Resume Building and Preparation
iii. How to locate available employment opportunities
iv. How to research the job market
v. The application processes
vi. How to prepare for phone and face to face interviews
vii. Dressing for Success
viii. The value of punctuality

I. Facilitate various program donations to contribute to the teaching, demonstration and learning process of students at
designated CTE Culinary Academies.

The primary goal of this scope of services is to provide a comprehensive program for CTE Culinary Art Career Academies that encompasses the full range of support programming currently available to CTE in an organized cohesive fashion in order to increase participation of CTE students.
